Orbitrap Astral Zoom Mass Spectrometer

Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap™ Astral™ Zoom Mass Spectrometer builds on the Orbitrap Astral platform with technologies that improve ion utilization and acquisition speed. A Fast Ion Filter and Bent Trap enable ion pre-accumulation before quadrupole precursor selection. Parallelizing this process extends effective ion accumulation time without slowing the acquisition cycle.

The Astral analyzer acquires up to 270 MS/MS spectra per second, while the Orbitrap analyzer delivers resolving power of up to 480,000 FWHM at m/z 200. This combination supports high-throughput LC-MS methods with short gradients, bringing together rapid product-ion spectrum acquisition and high-resolution accurate-mass measurement.

Enhanced Dynamic Range (eDR) mode extends the dynamic range of Orbitrap Full Scan measurements, supporting the detection of low-abundance components alongside highly abundant compounds. A dedicated Low-input mode increases Astral detection sensitivity for sample-limited studies, particularly single-cell proteomics, immunopeptidomics, and spatial proteomics.

The platform supports DDA and DIA, while Hybrid DIA combines untargeted DIA acquisition with intelligently triggered targeted MS/MS measurements within a single injection. This enables selected analytes to be monitored alongside broader investigation of sample composition.

For multiplexed quantitation, TMT HR mode provides Astral analyzer resolving power of 100,000 FWHM at m/z 138. Improved reporter-ion separation supports TMTpro™ labeling experiments and comparisons across multiple samples. Faster stepped-energy HCD fragmentation further expands the ability to acquire informative product-ion spectra.

Orbitrap Astral Zoom supports quantitative proteomics, plasma proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and biopharmaceutical research. Combined with Vanquish™ Neo UHPLC and suitable low-flow columns, it enables integrated workflows for reproducible chromatographic separation and highly sensitive mass spectrometric detection.

The optional BioPharma configuration extends the Orbitrap analyzer mass range to m/z 8000, provides additional pressure control, and enables top-down and middle-down MS/MS measurements with the Astral analyzer. These capabilities expand the platform’s applications to intact protein and protein-complex characterization.
