Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap™ Astral™ Mass Spectrometer combines high-resolution accurate-mass measurement in the Orbitrap analyzer with rapid, sensitive product-ion spectrum acquisition in the Astral analyzer. A quadrupole mass filter selects precursor ions, while synchronized ion management enables parallel processing of up to five separate ion packets. This architecture improves instrument utilization during complex proteomics experiments.
The Orbitrap analyzer delivers resolving power of up to 480,000 FWHM at m/z 200, while the Astral analyzer acquires up to 200 MS/MS spectra per second at 80,000 FWHM at m/z 524. This combination supports short chromatographic gradients, narrow peaks, and the analysis of large numbers of peptides in complex samples. These performance figures apply under defined conditions and method settings.
The platform supports DDA and high-resolution DIA, providing flexibility in identification and quantitation strategies. Workflows include both label-free quantitation (LFQ) and multiplexed experiments using TMT-labeled peptides. These approaches enable protein abundance comparisons across multiple samples and investigation of changes in biological processes.
High sensitivity makes Orbitrap Astral well suited for single-cell proteomics, plasma proteomics, immunopeptidomics, and phosphoproteomics. The system supports the detection of low-abundance components and the investigation of potential biomarkers across large biological sample cohorts.
Combined with Vanquish™ Neo UHPLC and suitable low-flow columns, Orbitrap Astral supports integrated LC-MS workflows. Xcalibur™ instrument control and application-specific templates simplify method development. Optional Proteome Discoverer™ and Ardia™ software solutions provide capabilities for proteomics data processing, organization, and storage.
The optional BioPharma configuration extends the Orbitrap analyzer mass range to m/z 8000 and adds capabilities for intact protein and protein-complex analysis under native and denaturing conditions.
